If you have a pump, a filter, and your pond is still green, you are probably wondering what you are doing wrong. In most cases, the answer is nothing. You are just missing one piece of the puzzle, and it is a piece that almost nobody in the industry explains properly.
Clean water and clear water are not the same thing. Once you understand the difference, green water stops being a mystery.

This article is written primarily for pond keepers who already have a pump and filter running and are still seeing green water. If you have no filtration at all, read on, because the clean versus clear explanation below will show you what each approach can and cannot realistically deliver, and help you decide what is right for your pond. Quick Answers: The Most Common Reasons Your Pond Is Still Green #
1. Your filter is working but your UV is not.
Most UV units have an indicator light. If it is not on, your UV is not running and you have no weapon against suspended algae. Check the light, check the power connection, and check the fuse before anything else.
2. Your UV bulb is too old.
Replace UV bulbs every 12 months without exception. The blue glow you can see is not what kills algae. UV light is invisible, and the effective UV output of most bulbs drops off significantly from around six months onwards. A bulb that looks fine is often doing very little. Put a note on your calendar now, do not wait until the water turns green to remember.
3. Your fish have outgrown your UV.
Yes, really. As fish grow, waste increases, nutrient load increases, and algae pressure increases. If your UV was correctly sized two years ago, it may not be adequate for the fish you have today. At Shirley Aquatics we work on the rule of quarters: size up significantly beyond the manufacturer recommendation rather than buying to the limit of the stated capacity. A UV unit working at the edge of its rating has no headroom when conditions change.
4. Your UV is working but your filter is not keeping up with the dead algae.
The UV kills algae by clumping the cells together so the filter can remove them. If your filter media is tired or clogged, it cannot process the dead material efficiently and it stays suspended in the water column. Try replacing some filter elements or adding a fine filter element temporarily. What you are seeing could simply be dead algae waiting to be removed, which is actually a sign the UV is doing its job.
5. Algae treatments are not working.
There are three common reasons for this.
First, water chemistry. Many algae treatments will not work if your pH or carbonate hardness is outside the right range. Before assuming the treatment is ineffective, test your water. Carbonate hardness in particular is something most pond keepers overlook entirely, and it affects far more than just algae treatments. Second, incorrect dosage. You need to know your actual pond volume to dose accurately. Guessing tends to mean underdosing, which achieves very little.
Third, the filter cannot keep up during treatment. Algae treatments can produce a significant volume of dead algae in a short period. During any course of treatment, rinse your filter media more frequently, up to once a day if needed, and always use pond water rather than tap water to do it. Tap water kills the beneficial bacteria your filter depends on.
Clean Water Is Not the Same as Clear Water #
Clean water means the water is biologically safe. Your filter has been processing ammonia and nitrite through the nitrogen cycle. The water chemistry is stable. Your fish are not being harmed.
Clear water means you can see through it. No green tinge. No suspended particles. Your fish are visible from the surface.
A pump and filter running correctly will give you clean water. They will not, on their own, give you clear water. The single-celled algae responsible for green water are small enough to pass straight through most filter media. The filter catches waste but it cannot catch what it cannot grab.
The piece that bridges clean and clear is a UV clarifier. It works by exposing the water to ultraviolet light as it passes through, causing those suspended algae cells to clump together into particles large enough for the filter to remove. Without a UV clarifier in the circuit, a filter has no reliable way of dealing with suspended algae.
The only way to guarantee clear water reliably is a properly managed pump, filter and UV clarifier working together. Natural ponds without filtration can achieve a good balance, particularly with the help of natural products like [Clarity by Ecotreat], dense planting, and careful management. However, they are more vulnerable to algae pressure when conditions shift, whether that is a spell of hot weather, a sudden increase in fish load, or the natural seasonal cycles we cover in the next section. The mechanical route gives you more consistent control. The natural route can work beautifully but requires more attention when the environment changes.
This matters because a lot of pond keepers assume something is seriously wrong when their water turns green. They panic, reach for treatments, and sometimes make things worse. In many cases, the fish are absolutely fine. The problem is visual, not biological, and the solution is mechanical.
What Natural Lakes Can Teach You About Your Pond #
People often look at a clear natural lake and assume nature has figured something out that they have not. In one sense that is true, but perhaps not in the way you might expect.
The plant-to-fish ratio in a natural lake is astronomical compared to a garden pond. Enormous volumes of water, vast root systems, decades of established biology. Even then, natural lakes still get algae twice a year, every year, without fail.
The first bloom arrives in early spring. Over winter, nutrients have been accumulating in the water with very little plant growth to absorb them and cooler temperatures slowing everything down. As daylight increases and water temperature rises, conditions become ideal for algae and it responds immediately.
The lake does not clear because nature corrects the problem. It clears because the algae exhausts its own food source and the population crashes. The nutrients run out faster than they are being replenished and the bloom collapses under its own success.
The second bloom arrives in late summer. All that dead algae from the spring bloom has been slowly breaking down back into its component nutrients, quietly rebuilding the food supply. When conditions are right again, it feeds the next cycle.
In a garden pond, this boom and bust looks like a crisis. Understanding that it is a natural and predictable cycle changes how you approach seasonal maintenance. You are not fixing a problem in spring. You are managing a cycle that will happen regardless, and the question is whether your setup handles it or whether it overwhelms you.
What Your Setup Actually Delivers: A Realistic Comparison #
This is where honest advice matters. Different combinations of equipment produce very different outcomes, and the gap between a basic setup and a well-balanced one is significant.

A note on plants, because they deserve more credit than they usually get. Higher plants, whether submerged oxygenators, marginals, or lilies, compete directly with algae for the same nutrients in the water. They win that competition consistently when they are established. Even serious koi enthusiasts, who tend to favour high-flow sterile setups, often incorporate natural planting specifically for nitrate removal. Plants are a benefit in every setup, regardless of what else you are running.
One thing the table does not show: UV clarifiers have no meaningful effect on blanket weed. Blanket weed is a different organism entirely and behaves differently. We will come back to that in the next article.
My Pond Was Clear. Now It’s Not. #
This is where the real frustration sits. Not ponds that have always been green, but ponds that were clear and have gone back. Here are the most common culprits.
The UV bulb has failed.
UV bulbs do not always fail dramatically. They often continue to glow while producing little or no effective UV output. If your unit has a quartz sleeve, check it. Limescale and algae build up on the sleeve and block the UV from reaching the water even when the bulb is technically working. A bulb that looks fine may not be doing much at all.
The UV bulb is over 12 months old.
This is the one that catches most people out. UV output degrades over time. By 12 months, most bulbs have lost a significant proportion of their effectiveness even if they still appear to be on. Replace your UV bulb every spring, before the season starts. Do it in March before the algae gets a head start, not in June when you are already looking at green water and trying to work out why.
Your fish have grown and outpaced your filter.
Fish grow, and most pond keepers underestimate just how much the nutrient load increases as they do. The juveniles you added two or three years ago are now considerably larger adults. They are eating more, producing more waste, and the biological load on your filter has crept up steadily. A filter that was perfectly sized for your stocking level when you bought it may simply not be big enough anymore.
If your pond has been established for a few years and green water has become a recurring problem despite everything else being in order, this is the first thing worth reviewing honestly.
The food-to-waste-to-algae multiplication.
Here is the one that stops people in their tracks.
One handful of food goes into your pond. Some of it is digested, but a meaningful portion passes through and becomes waste. Think of it as one handful of food producing five handfuls of fish waste. That waste settles on the pond floor. Left there, it breaks down slowly and continuously, leaching nutrients back into the water. The waste needs to reach your filter to be processed. If it is just sitting on the bottom, the filter cannot touch it. This is where circulation matters. A well-positioned pump, good return flow, or an air pump creating gentle movement across the pond floor helps carry that waste toward the filter intake before it has a chance to settle and break down. Improving your circulation is not glamorous advice, but it makes a real difference to water quality over time.
