Glowlight Tetra are a small shoaling species of fish from South America. Their natural habitat are forest streams with extremely dark waters that are heavy in tanins. This species does not appreciate bright lights and they tend to be quite shy. The fish you see in shops however are tank bred and are much more hardy and adaptable to a wide range of conditions, but soft acidic water will bring out the best in them. Floating plants and lots of shady areas in the aquarium will make this fish feel more secure. The addition of plants and bog wood will also help the fish feel safe and offer hiding places.

They should be maintained in a shoal of at least 6, but will exhibit more of their natural behaviour in larger numbers. Unlike most Tetra, they tend to stay closer to the bottom of the aquarium. Tank mates should be other smaller fish with similar temperament. We recommend housing them with other South American species like dwarf cichlids and corydoras as well as other tetras.

Food can be offered in the form of small pellets, flakes and fresh or frozen insect larvae such as daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp.

Please note that the image is for illustration purposes and the fish you will receive may not be identical. These fish are still juveniles and have yet to colour up. A healthy environment and good quality food will help bring them into full colour. If you have any questions about keeping these fish, please don't hesitate to ask a member of staff.
