Description

Bristlenose Catfish – Ancistrus sp.

The Bristlenose Catfish (Ancistrus sp.) is one of the most popular algae-eating fish for tropical community aquariums. With its distinctive sucker-shaped mouth, mottled brown colouring and peaceful temperament, this hardworking South American catfish is both an interesting aquarium inhabitant and a useful algae grazer.

Unlike the Common Pleco, which can grow exceptionally large, the Bristlenose Catfish generally reaches around 12cm, making it a much more manageable choice for home aquariums.

As they mature, males develop the characteristic fleshy bristles across their snouts, while females usually have much smaller bristles or none at all.

Bristlenose Catfish Set Up

A mature aquarium of approximately 90 litres or larger is recommended for an adult Bristlenose Catfish, with plenty of floor space to explore.

Provide bogwood, smooth rocks and caves to create sheltered resting places. Bogwood is particularly beneficial, offering a natural grazing surface for algae and biofilm.

Good filtration, oxygenation and moderate water movement are important. Bristlenose Catfish generally prefer shaded areas and often become more active during the evening.

Bristlenose Catfish Behaviour

Bristlenose Catfish are peaceful towards most other fish, spending much of their time grazing on aquarium surfaces or resting beneath decorations.

However, mature males can become territorial towards other Bristlenose Catfish, particularly when competing for caves.

If keeping several individuals, provide a larger aquarium with multiple hiding places and sufficient space for each fish to establish its own territory.

Bristlenose Catfish Tank Mates

These adaptable catfish are excellent additions to peaceful tropical community aquariums.

Suitable companions include:

  • Tetras and Rasboras
  • Corydoras Catfish
  • Angelfish
  • Peaceful Dwarf Cichlids
  • Gouramis
  • Livebearers

Avoid aggressive bottom-dwelling fish that may compete for territory or prevent the Bristlenose from feeding.

Bristlenose Feeding

Although well known for eating algae, Bristlenose Catfish must receive a varied diet and should never be expected to survive on aquarium algae alone.

Suitable foods include:

  • Quality algae wafers
  • Spirulina-based sinking pellets
  • Blanched courgette and other suitable vegetables
  • Occasional frozen bloodworm or other protein-rich foods

They also graze naturally on biofilm growing across bogwood and aquarium decorations.

Feed regularly, preferably towards the evening when these catfish are most active.

Bristlenose Catfish Water Parameters

Bristlenoses are relatively adaptable, thriving in stable tropical aquarium conditions.

They prefer well-oxygenated water with effective filtration and regular partial water changes.

Although they tolerate a fairly broad range of water conditions, avoiding sudden fluctuations is more important than attempting to achieve an exact pH.

Bristlenose Care Level

The Bristlenoses is an excellent choice for beginners and experienced aquarists alike.

Its manageable adult size, peaceful nature and algae-grazing habits make it a valuable addition to many established community aquariums.

With suitable hiding places, a varied diet and good water quality, these characterful catfish can live for many years.
