Colombian Tetra are a peaceful shoaling species from Colombia. They are one of the larger tetra species, which makes them great candidates for larger aquaria with peaceful cichlids and other larger fish that would eat smaller shoalers. These fish are often overlooked in shops as they may appear quite drab as juveniles, but once they settle, they colour up to reveal an irridescent blue stripe all the way down the spine and bright red fins, making them one of the most interesting fish in the aquarium. The aquarium should be spacious with soft and acidic conditions. The should be a reasonable amount of open swimming space and dim lighting as these fish prefer darker waters. Floating plants can help diffuse the lighting.

Colombians should be kept in a shoal of 6 or more individuals and they tend to be quite an active fish, especially at feeding times. Tank mates can include some of the larger cichlids, like severums and acaras, angelfish, barbs, several catfish and many more. Avoid anything with long fins as these fish are known to fin nip. They also enjoy eating soft, fleshy plants.

Food can be offered in the form of pellets, as well as fresh and frozen fish foods such as bloodworms, mysis, brine shrimp and daphnia.
