Yellow Lab are African Cichlids. They are suitable for Malawi set ups and coexist well alongside peacocks, haps and other mbunas.

Their aquarium should be large and dressed with plenty of rocks to act as a form of real estate for the fish to establish their territories on. This is key to successfully keeping Malawi as their aggression is partly territorial. These cichlids need hard water with a high pH and this is typically achieved by using ocean rock and/or coral sand. With that said, dark substrate brings out the colours better and makes the Yellow Labs feel safer. Plants are not recommended for this species as they will most likely eat them. They are a territorially aggressive species. Most keepers will overstock them in very large numbers as this spreads out the aggression and reduces the chance of any one fish getting singled out. For this reason you will need excellent filtration and frequent water changes to help keep the parameters under control.

Like most Malawi, they don't mix well with other species of fish and should be kept exclusively with peacocks, haps and other mbunas. Malawi should never be mixed with South or Central American Cichlids!

Food should be offered in the form of African cichlid pellets as well as fresh and frozen foods such as mysis shrimp and brine shrimp. Live and Frozen food should be offered sparingly as these fish are largely vegetarian and need a fairly low protein diet.
