The Cracked Zebra Pleco is a very beautiful variety of pleco rarely seen in shops in the UK. The base colour can be anything from yellow to white with black, brown or grey worm-line pattern that can vary a great deal from dots to worm-lines to stripes.

Like all plecos, it spends much of its time in darker areas of the tank and in caves. It doesn't need a particularly large aquarium, we recommend 100L upwards for one specimen. The aquarium should be furnished with bog wood, rocks and caves to give the pleco an opportunity to hide and breed. There should always be more caves than plecos in the aquarium. They don't like bright light, so a black water tank would be ideal. Alternatively, floating plants can be used to diffuse the light in the aquarium. A strong current is recommended along with an air stone to keep the oxygen levels high and weekly water changes are absolutely essential. Water should be soft and acidic.

They are a peaceful species that don't get particularly territorial and get along with their tank mates. However it is important to make sure that the pleco gets its share of food if other, more boisterous fish of similar dietary needs are to cohabit. They'll work best with other South american species such as Tetras, Corydoras, Apistogrammas and Angelfish.

The L236 prefers a more meaty diet, so be sure to offer things like bloodworm and mysis shrimp alongside algae wafers and fresh plant matter.
