Spotted Raphael Catfish are a member of the Doradid family, also known as the talking catfish. They're called so because of the audible sound they make when taken out of the water. This medium sized catfish is best suited to larger aquariums as it should be kept in a shoal of 5 or more specimens. The substrate must be sand as the fish will spend much of its time searching for food in it. They are mostly active at night, however keeping other species like tetra and dwarf cichlids with them will encourage them to come out more during the day, but be mindful of the fact that they are micro predators, so avoid species that are small enough to become a snack. Snails are also a common item on the menu for Raphaels. They prefer soft, acidic conditions and diffused lighting.
Agamyxis pectinifrons are fairly peaceful in temperament, so the only thing that should really be noted is their size. Ideal tank mates include larger tetras like Ornates and Colombians, Angelfish and Dwarf Cichlids.
Food can be offered in the form of Catfish pellets as well as fresh or frozen fish foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp and bloodworm.
Please note that the image is for illustration purposes and the fish you will receive may not be identical. These fish are still juveniles and have yet to colour up. A healthy environment and good quality food will help bring them into full colour. If you have any questions about keeping these fish, please don't hesitate to ask a member of staff.
