The Pearl Gourami is a labyrinth fish from South East Asia. It is one of the more peaceful gouramies and tends to be relatively easy to keep.
Environment
The aquarium should be fairly spacious as these fish will grow to a good size, with males requiring a territory of sorts. Additional space should be allowed for any females so that they can escape the pursuits of the males from time to time. A fully furnished and planted aquarium is recommended. The addition of plants and decor will help break the line of sight and offer welcome hiding places for any fish that needs a little rest, as well as things to explore. Whilst they will adapt to a very wide range of conditions, they do best in soft, acidic water.
Temperament and Tank Mates
Like all gouramies, they spend the majority of their time near the surface of the water, so tank mates should be chosen as middle and lower level occupants to avoid intrusion on the gouramies. Ideal tank mates include Harlequin Rasboras, Cherry Barbs, Kuhli Loaches and other similar kinds of fish. It's best to avoid Betta and any other labyrinth fish as they may be considered competition, which will result in fighting and chasing.
Feeding
Food can be offered in the form of micro pellets and fresh or frozen fish foods such as daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp.
