Description

Large Long Fin German Ram – Mikrogeophagus ramirezi

Long Fin German Rams are a peaceful dwarf cichlid that we recommend for the more experienced aquarists. They are best maintained as a male and female pair, but can be kept as a colony in large tanks that offer enough space for all the fish to have their own individual territories. In smaller tanks, the Rams may become aggressive, especially if they’re breeding.

German Ram Aquarium

The aquarium should be an absolute minimum of 60L, though footprint is far more important than depth. This is partly to accommodate the territorial nature of this fish, but also helps to balance the water quality, so bigger is always better. Long Fin German Rams appreciate soft, acidic water, moderare flow and temperatures at the higher end of the tropical scale. The aquarium should be furnished with plants, bog wood and caves that the fish can use to establish their territories. Soft sand substrate is highly recommended as these fish do like to rummage and move little bits of substrate around. Frequent partial water changes are essential to the wellbeing of the German Ram as they are incredibly sensitive to elevated levels of Nitrates. Excellent water quality must be maintained at all times for these delicate fish.

German Ram Behaviour

German Rams, long fin  or otherwise are generally not a problematic fish. They are very inquisitive and can be quite confident when kept in the right setting. They occupy the lower levels of the aquarium for the most part and like to claim caves, rocks and other bits of decoration as their little territory. They don’t tend to fuss over visiting tank mates, except for other rams, which usually leads to flaring and other displays, but seldom to fights. Bonded pairs do form quite a strong bond and will often be seen foraging together. Like many Cichlids, German Rams are very expressive and will change their colour in a blink of an eye to express their emotions.

Tank Mates

Tank mates should also be chosen carefully. They need to be able to thrive in soft acidic conditions and at higher temperatures as the Rams do best when it’s warmer. Several South American species of Tetra like cardinals, neons and rummies as well as corydoras will do great. Avoid any larger cichlids as they may stress the Rams out, which is likely to lead to sickness. It’s also worth noting that this is a long finned variety, so fin nippers like Tiger Barbs should be avoided.

Feeding

Rams are not particularly fussy, so food can be offered in the form of micro pellets and fresh or frozen fish foods such as brineshrimp, mysis, bloodworm and daphnia.

FAQ

Are German Rams easy to keep?

We would class this species as intermediate because of their sensitivities to fluctuations and water quality issues.

Is it possible to order a male and female pair?

If we have both a male and a female in stock, we will strive to send a pair on request. There is also the option of waiting a week longer for the next batch to become available.

Do Rams damage plants?

Dwarf Cichlids in general don’t tend to mess with plants. Long Fin German Rams may occasionally uproot a plant if it’s near their nesting site and doesn’t suit the feng sui they were going for, but they’re not in the habit of causing the sheer level devastation that large cichlids are so famous for.

Can Long Fin German Ram go in a community tank?

Absolutely. They don’t tend to concern themselves with most tank mates and will get along just fine with most community fish.

Are these available in a larger size?

Yes, there is one size larger available and we can order it in especially for you.
