Corydoras nanus

Corydoras nanus is a beautifully patterned dwarf Corydoras from the slow-moving rivers and tributaries of South America. With its distinctive silver body, dark horizontal markings and active nature, it makes an excellent addition to peaceful community aquariums.

Unlike some Corydoras that spend almost all of their time on the substrate, Corydoras nanus is often seen swimming in the middle levels of the aquarium alongside shoaling fish, making it one of the more active members of the Corydoras family.

Corydoras nanus Aquarium Set Up

Like all Corydoras, Corydoras nanus appreciates a mature, well-maintained aquarium with clean, highly oxygenated water. Fine sand is the ideal substrate, allowing them to sift naturally through the sand in search of food without damaging their delicate barbels.

A well-planted aquarium with driftwood, smooth stones and shaded areas will help these fish feel secure while still leaving plenty of open space for swimming. Stable water conditions are far more important than chasing exact water parameters, making regular maintenance essential.

Behaviour

orydoras nanus is an exceptionally peaceful shoaling fish and should always be kept in groups of at least six, although larger groups of eight or more will display far more natural behaviour.

Unlike many Corydoras species, they frequently venture away from the bottom of the aquarium and can often be seen schooling together through the middle water levels. Their constant activity and inquisitive nature make them fascinating fish to observe.

As with all Corydoras, they should never be kept as solitary fish, as they rely on the company of their own species to feel secure.

Corydoras nanus Tank Mates

Tank mates can include other small, peaceful species as long as they can tolerate the acidic conditions. We recommend housing them with other South American species, such as other corydoras, tetras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids, plecos and angelfish (if the aquarium is large enough).

Feeding

Like all cories, this species should not be expected to survive on food the scavenge. we recommend feeding catfish wafers, micro pellets, micro crumb and fresh or frozen fish foods such as cyclops, daphnia, copepods and baby brine shrimp.

Many people think Corydoras are purely bottom-dwelling scavengers, but Corydoras nanus often spends surprising amounts of time swimming in open water. Keeping them in a larger group encourages this natural shoaling behaviour and makes them far more confident than fish kept in pairs or small groups.
