The trusty favourite of Parrot enthusiasts, the Blood Parrot is one of the most colourful large cichlids you can have. They are in fact a man made hybrid of several species of Cichlids, but the specifics are largely on the basis of speculation.

The aquarium should be spacious to accommodate these large fish and it should be furnished with lots of rocks and bog wood for the fish to explore. Fine substrate such as sand should be added as this fish does thoroughly enjoy digging and creating pits and mounds. Plants are not recommended as they're likely to be eaten or just destroyed for entertainment.

Each Blood Parrot is likely to establish its own little territory, so it is important to ensure that if several specimens are kept, there is plenty of space for everyone to have their own spot.

Once settled, these parrot cichlids are fairly peaceful, friendly and very interactive with their owners. They can be somewhat territorial towards tank mates, especially other cichlids. For that reason, a large tank is a must to keep everyone happy and safe.
Ideal tank mates include other peaceful Cichlids, Angelfish, Cories, Catfish, Barbs and larger Tetras. Smaller fish should be avoided as they may be seen as food.

Food should be offered in the form of sinking cichlid pellets as well as fresh or frozen insect larvae. As a special treat, out parrots love Evolution Aqua dried freshwater shrimp
