Freshwater Shrimp Pond Fish Treats – Dried Gammarus

Freshwater Shrimp Pond Fish Treats are made from 100% dried Gammarus, providing a natural, high-protein supplementary food for koi and other pond fish.

With 48% crude protein, dried Gammarus make an excellent occasional treat alongside a good-quality complete pond fish food. Their lightweight texture means they float readily on the surface, encouraging koi and other confident pond fish to come up and feed.

Gammarus are small freshwater crustaceans and provide a more natural alternative to conventional pellets when you want to add variety to your fishes’ diet.

A Natural Treat for Koi and Pond Fish

We particularly like feeding dried Gammarus during the warmer months when koi are active and feeding enthusiastically.

They should be regarded as a supplementary treat rather than a complete food, so continue feeding an appropriate balanced koi or pond fish diet as the main part of your fishes’ nutrition.

Feed only as much as the fish will readily consume and remove excessive uneaten food.

Not Just for Pond Fish

Dried Gammarus can also make a useful occasional treat for larger tropical aquarium fish, particularly species capable of handling the whole shrimp.

We have found them suitable for fish such as Parrot Cichlids, Severums, Jack Dempseys and other larger cichlids.

Smaller pieces can be offered where appropriate, while fish reluctant to take food from the surface may accept Gammarus more readily if they are soaked first. Once softened, gently squeeze out trapped air before adding them to help the shrimp sink.

They can also be offered as part of an appropriate varied diet to some aquatic turtles.

Can tropical fish eat dried Gammarus?
Yes. Many medium and large tropical fish enjoy dried Gammarus. Larger cichlids are particularly enthusiastic feeders, although the shrimp can be broken into smaller pieces where necessary.

Do dried Gammarus help enhance fish colour?
Gammarus and other crustaceans contain naturally occurring carotenoid pigments. These can contribute to natural pigmentation when included as part of a varied, nutritionally balanced diet. I much prefer that wording to our current claim that the high protein itself makes fish more colourful.

Why do dried Gammarus float?
Their dry bodies can trap air, making them naturally buoyant. If you want to feed them to fish lower in the aquarium, soak the Gammarus first and gently squeeze them underwater to help release trapped air.

Can turtles eat dried Gammarus?
Many aquatic turtles will readily eat Gammarus, and dried crustaceans are commonly included in prepared turtle foods. They are best offered as part of a varied diet appropriate for the particular species rather than as a complete food.
