Snow White Sand Frequently Asked Questions

Is aquarium sand safe for fish?

Yes. Aquarium sand is specifically designed for aquatic use and provides a safe substrate for most freshwater fish when properly rinsed before use. It is an inert substrate and will not mess with the pH and KH of your water, however if the sand is not rinsed, it can carry fine sand dust that may cause a small spike. Sand can carry a small amount of dust, which could also cloud your water when you first add it to the aquarium. However, this dust should settle within 48 hours. If it doesn’t, filter floss can be used to collect it.

Which fish prefer sand substrates?

Many species including Corydoras, Loaches, Geophagus Cichlids and other bottom-feeding fish benefit from sand substrates as they allow natural foraging behaviour.

Can live plants be grown in sand?

Yes. Many aquatic plants can be successfully grown in sand, particularly when combined with root tabs or suitable plant fertilisers.

How much sand do I need?

The amount required depends on the dimensions of your aquarium and the desired substrate depth. Most aquariums benefit from a substrate depth of approximately 2–5cm. This means that for every 30cm x 30cm footprint of an aquarium, you should be expecting to use 1kg – 2kg of sand.

Is aquarium Snow White Sand harder to clean than gravel?

Not necessarily. Debris often remains on the surface of sand where it can be easily removed during routine maintenance using a gravel cleaner or siphon. However, inexperienced hobbyists may accidentally syphon up some sand while they are learning how to work with sand. But this isn’t really a big problem as the sand can always be returned to the aquarium.
