Description
Seachem pH Alert
Seachem pH Alert provides continuous monitoring of aquarium pH without the need to repeatedly use liquid tests or test strips. Designed specifically for freshwater aquariums, it sits inside the aquarium or filter where the colour-changing sensor provides an easy visual indication of the current pH.
The sensor covers a pH range of 5.8 to 8.2 and changes colour as the pH changes. Simply compare the sensor with the colour scale on the unit to obtain a reading.
Because pH Alert remains in the aquarium continuously, it also makes it much easier to spot unexpected changes between routine water tests.
How Does Seachem pH Alert Work?
Once submerged, the sensor responds to the pH of the surrounding water and displays the result through a reversible colour change.
When first installed, allow approximately 30 minutes for the sensor to respond. After this initial period, subsequent changes in pH will normally register within around 10 minutes.
There are no reagents to add, test tubes to clean or strips to dispose of.
How to Use
Place the pH Alert somewhere it can be easily viewed inside the aquarium or filter.
For the easiest colour comparison, view the sensor under natural daylight or daylight-simulating aquarium lighting.
pH Alert is intended as a convenient continuous indicator. If you notice an unexpected reading or significant change in pH, it is sensible to confirm the result with an appropriate aquarium water test before making major adjustments to the water chemistry.
Cleaning & Replacement
Very little maintenance is required. If algae or deposits begin to obscure the unit, gently clean them away using a clean, soft material.
Avoid using soap, detergents, bleach or abrasive objects on the sensor, as these may damage it or interfere with its operation.
Some aquarium medications containing dyes may also discolour the sensor.
As the sensor reaches the end of its useful life, its colour will begin to noticeably fade or wash out. At this point, the pH Alert should be replaced.
Seachem pH Alert Frequently Asked Questions
What pH range does Seachem pH Alert measure?
It indicates freshwater aquarium pH between 5.8 and 8.2.
Is Seachem pH Alert suitable for marine aquariums?
No. pH Alert is designed for freshwater aquariums only.
Does it need batteries?
No. The sensor works through a reversible colour response and requires no batteries, electricity or electronic probe.
How quickly does pH Alert work?
Allow approximately 30 minutes when the unit is first installed. After that, changes in aquarium pH should normally be indicated within around 10 minutes.
Can I leave it in the aquarium permanently?
Yes. That’s really the point of the product – it is designed to remain submerged and provide continuous visual pH monitoring.
Can Seachem pH Alert replace normal water testing?
It’s extremely useful for keeping an eye on pH between tests, but I wouldn’t present it as a replacement for all aquarium water testing. Other important parameters such as ammonia, nitrite and nitrate still need to be monitored separately.
Why does my Seachem pH Alert look a different colour under aquarium lighting?
The colour of the sensor can appear different depending on the lighting used to view it. For the clearest comparison with the reference colours, Seachem recommends reading pH Alert under natural daylight or daylight-simulating light. Strong colour-enhancing aquarium lighting can make the sensor more difficult to interpret.
