Albino Red Eye Angelfish – Pterophyllum Scalare

The Albino Red Eye Angelfish ( Pterophyllum Scalare ) is a popular choice of tropical fish and one of the longest kept fish in the hobby. They requires a larger aquarium with plenty of height, which is important when it comes to this fish as they get surprisingly tall, especially the Diamond Veiltail Angelfish and other long finned varieties. Though they have a bit of a bad reputation, they do actually make good community fish in larger aquariums.

The Set Up

The Aquarium should a good size of at least 150L. This fish has a reputation for aggression, but this behaviour is far more prominent when the aquarium is inappropriately sized and the angel feels hemmed in. They prefer to be kept in soft, acidic conditions with gentle flow and temperatures at the higher end of the tropical scale. The aquarium should be furnished with rocks, wood and plants, which will act as visual barriers, as well as hiding spots. This helps a great deal when housing several angels together. but take care to avoid anything jagged or pointy that the fish may be able to injure itself on. Substrate should be fine sand to protect the fish from injuring themselves

Albino Red Eye Angelfish Temperament

Angels ( Pterophyllum Scalare ) are not nearly as aggressive as people like to make out. They are however often placed in the wrong kind of surroundings and in tanks that are simply not big enough and this can create the aggression in angels. Whilst they are cichlids, they actually prefer to be in large social groups, leaving the group only when they pair up and decide to spawn. In aquaria large enough, they can achieve this and everything remains peaceful as the other fish are able to stay away from the nest. In smaller aquariums, the angel will eventually become aggressive because other fish have no choice but to invade its space.

For the most part, Angels are fairly peaceful. This does not however count when it comes to smaller fish. Angels will try to eat some small species, but anything that’s too big to fit in the angel’s mouth is generally ignored.

Albino Red Eye Angelfish Tank Mates

Ideal tank mates should be other South American species such as larger Tetras, Rams and Plecos, among others. Avoid fin nipping species such as Tiger Barbs, as well as large belligerent Cichlids that may outmuscle the Angels.

Feeding

Feed your Albino Red Eye Angelfish pellets, flakes and fresh or frozen foods such as mysis, brine shrimp and krill to boost protein levels.
