Description
Starlight Pleco L059 – Ancistrus hoplogenys
the Starlight Pleco L059 (Ancistrus hoplogenys) is a beautiful South American bristlenose pleco recognised by its jet-black body covered in bright white spots. Unlike many larger plecos, the L059 remains a manageable size, making it an excellent choice for medium to large community aquariums.
Although often purchased as an algae eater, the Starlight Pleco should be viewed as an attractive community fish first and a useful algae grazer second. With the correct care, these hardy plecos become fascinating additions to peaceful aquariums. The species is commonly known as the Starlight Bristlenose Pleco and remains much smaller than many common plecos sold in the hobby
Starlight Pleco L059 Aquarium Setup
The Starlight Pleco naturally inhabits slow-moving rivers and streams where submerged wood, tangled roots and shaded areas provide security throughout the day. Replicating these conditions will help your fish feel at home.
Bogwood is particularly important as it provides both shelter and a source of fibre that aids digestion. Caves, rocky crevices and shaded hiding places should also be provided, allowing the pleco somewhere to retreat during daylight hours.
Like most Ancistrus species, the L059 appreciates clean, well-oxygenated water and stable water conditions. Mature aquariums are always preferable, as they provide the biofilm and algae these fish naturally graze between meals. Specialist care guides also recommend mature aquaria with wood and shaded hiding places.
Behaviour
Starlight Plecos are peaceful and spend much of the day resting beneath wood or inside caves before becoming more active during the evening.
They generally ignore mid-water fish, making them excellent community aquarium residents. Adult males can become territorial towards other bristlenose plecos, particularly where hiding places are limited, so it’s best to provide multiple caves if keeping more than one.
Unlike many larger plecos, they rarely disturb plants or décor and are perfectly suited to peaceful tropical communities.
L059 Starlight Pleco Tank Mates
Tank mates can be chosen liberally as the pleco is peaceful and uninterested in its tank mates. It may however have territorial disputes with others of its own kind or similarly shaped fish. Their need for soft, acidic conditions should be taken into account though when choosing tank mates. Ideal tank mates include Corydoras, Tetras, Angelfish, Dwarf Cichlids, Pencil Fish and Hatchet Fish. Avoid large Cichlids and other aggressive species.
Feeding
Although L059 will feed on algae and biofilm, they will need to also be fed to maintain their health. As they are omnivores, we recommend algae wafers, as well as catfish wafers alongside treats of frozen fish foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and mysis. Additional supplements of cucumber or courgette is also recommended.
