The Tyre Track Eel is a large fish with a very widespread habitat. It is suited to large aquaria only as it will grow nearly 1m in length. This is a relatively peaceful species that can actually be kept in a community, but small fish should be avoided as they will most likely be viewed as food. Equally, any large overly boisterous fish may prevent the eel from getting its share of food.

The Aquarium should be as long as possible to allow the fish room to move around. Substrate should be soft sand as these fish like to burrow and bury themselves and the addition of bog wood, rocks, caves and pipes will give the fish good hiding places. Plants can be added, but due to the Eel's digging habits, it is best to stick with epiphytes like Java Fern and Anubias, which can be tied or glued to wood and rocks. Lighting should be diffused with floating plants as these fish are nocturnal and don't particularly appreciate bright lighting.

Ideal tank mates include large barbs, congo tetras, Severums, Angelfish, Knife Fish, Gouramies, Rainbowfish and anything else that isn't particularly aggressive or small enough to be eaten. They should not be kept with others of their own kind unless the aquarium is exceptionally large.

Food can be offered in the form of frozen fish foods such as mysis, chopped cockle and mussel and krill. This fish is unlikely to accept dry foods.

Please note that the image is for illustration purposes and the fish you will receive may not be identical. These fish are still juveniles and have yet to colour up. A healthy environment and good quality food will help bring them into full colour. If you have any questions about keeping these fish, please don't hesitate to ask a member of staff.
