The threadfin is one of the smaller rainbow species. It is a peaceful shoaler that should be maintained in a group of 6 or more individuals, with females outnumbering males two to one. The aquarium should be at least 2ft long and planted. The addition of bog wood is welcomed as it gives the fish enrichment and hiding places. Flow should be kept gentle. Whilst the females are not as impressive as the males, they are crucial to the shoal as they influence the intensity of colour and behaviour of the males. Males will often display to each other and to the females in an attempt to impress them and outcompete each other.
Frequent partial water changes are important with this species as they are quite sensitive to pollutants in the water.
Tank mates should be other small species that are peaceful and not known for fin nipping.
Feed nano pellets, flake and fresh or frozen foods like daphnia, cyclops, and baby brineshrimp. The food must be of appropriate size to the fish.
