The Siamese Algae Eater or Flying Fox is a brilliant addition to medium to large aquariums. They are a prolific algae eater that will grow to a more manageable size than some of the Plecostomus species. The aquarium needs to be fairly mature, partly because a steady supply of algae needs to be available. It should always be reasonably long to allow the SAE plenty of room for swimming. Filtration should be efficient with a strong flow to replicate their natural habitat. A tight fitting is essential as these fish are notorious jumpers.
This species can be kept with most plants provided that there is adequate food supply in terms of algae and other vegetable matter. Supplementing their food is essential as they can't survive on algae alone. Pleco wafers will provide them with a healthy food source with added protein to keep them healthy.
This species should be kept singularly or in groups of 5 or more individuals. Anything in-between is likely to result in squabbling amongst the members of the shoal. For the most part, this is a peaceful fish and can be kept in most communities, but avoid any particularly shy or skittish fish that may be easily spooked by this highly active fish. Ideal tank mates include barbs, rasboras, larger tetras, rainbowfish, some of the medium sized cichlids and many more.
Food can be offered in the form of algae wafers and some fresh or blanched vegetables. Be sure to remove any uneaten food once the fish have finished feeding.
