Description

Sally Lightfoot Crab – Percnon gibbesi

This is a marine species of crab and must only be kept in marine (salt water) aquariums. It will not survive in a freshwater (tropical / cold water) aquarium.

The Sally Lightfoot is a unique species of crab and a great addition to your reef tank. It is an omnivorous species that thrives on most foods it can scavenge amongst the rocks and in the sand bed, helping to keep it clean and free of detritus and algae.

Flat in appearance, they are a species of shore crabs and are best suited to aquariums with a deep sandbed, allowing them to exhibit their natural foraging behaviours by digging into the sand with their claws. They will eat some algae and whatever the fish leave behind. We do recommend giving them additional food such as mysis, krill and chopped meaty foods like mussels and cockles. If there isn’t much algae in the aquarium, dried seaweed can be used to supplement their diet.

This species is both peaceful and fully reef safe when they’re young, but some older, larger specimens have been known to snatch small fish and invertebrates. This should be taken into consideration when adding one of these crabs to the aquarium. Keeping them well fed can discourage predatory behaviour, but it’s not guaranteed. Corals tend to be left alone.

Maximum Size 8cm
