The Regal Damselfish is considered to be one of the most docile of the damsels. In the wild they are often found in large groups in lagoons and inshore reefs. As such they can be kept as a singular specimen, a male and female pair or a very large group of 9 or more as long as the aquarium is large enough and there are plenty of hiding places and visual barriers. Smaller groups should be avoided as the fish will likely in-fight, which will eventually lead to losses.

Tank mates should be chosen carefully, avoiding particularly mild mannered fish and large predators altogether.

Regal Damsels are one of the many electric blue damselfish and are sometimes confused with the very similar looking Yellow Belly Damselfish.
