The Red Rainbow fish is a peaceful shoaling species ideally suited to medium to large community aquariums. They're best kept in groups of 6 or more individuals, preferably with a mix of males and females. The aquarium should be at least 4ft long and planted around the back and sides, witch an open swimming area in the centre. Similarly to most rainbowfish, the juveniles look quite drab and are often overlooked in shops. But once the fish settle in a planted aquarium, they will soon begin to colour up with females turning more bronze and males turning a solid bright red colour.

Despite being quite a large fish, red rainbows don't attack other fish and can be kept with a variety of other peaceful tropical fish. This is predominantly because of the small size of their heads in comparison to their bodies. Food can be offered in the form of tropical pellets as well as fresh and frozen insect larvae such as bloodworm.

In the wild, they are found only in one lake in Northern Papua. As a result, they are considered a vulnerable species with most specimens in the hobby being tank bred.
