HOUSING REQUIREMENTS
Environment:
Found besides creeks and waterways in java, Indonesia. Hiding in leaf litter and under rocks and branches during the day, becoming active at night to hunt.
Vivarium Size:
A minimum size enclosure for a pair (we recommend pairs or groups as living solitary can stress the animals) 15x15x15” glass aquarium.
Substrate:
A sand soil mix substrate will work best for these crabs as it very closely mimics what they would experience in the wild. This will also allow for good water retention and digging opportunities. Branches, and rocks for climbing should be added for enrichment as should bark and other decoration for digging. Paludariums work very well for this species of crab.
Food and Water:
Geosesarma hagen are omnivores, specifically scavengers and will eat anything organic that they can digest. A base diet of crab pellets will ensure that all vitamin and mineral needs are met, but to this you can add fish, meat, pre-killed insects, vegetation, vegetables, fruits and even bones and shells. Water should be available at all times, approximate 1/3rd of the enclosure should be water with hiding places available close to the water source. Relative humidity should be 75%.
Heat/Light Requirements:
At night it is best to allow the temperature to drop 2-5°C to mimic the natural nightly temperature change that they would experience in the wild. This will allow the predominantly nocturnal vampire crabs to become active.
Lighting for your Red Devil Vampire Crab can be minimal, from a low wattage UV coil to a broad-spectrum LED.
Below are the ideal temperatures for your vampire crab:
Day: 22-29°C
Night: 18-24°C
