The Niger Triggerfish or Red Tooth Triggerfish is a large fish that's best known for its charming and intelligent personality. They are a very playful fish that sometimes make grunting noises as a form of communication with their owners. They are however not considered reef safe. Whilst most corals will likely be left alone, other invertebrates will most likely be eaten. Due to its territorial and aggressive nature, it's best to keep them only with other boisterous fish, avoiding all other triggerfish as they'll be considered competition. They are notorious for chewing cables and tubing, so please be mindful of that when deciding on the aquarium's layout and consider covers for all electrical cables and pipework.
Ideal tank mates could be larger angels, surgeonfish, snappers, certain wrasses, lionfish, groupers, moray eels and puffers.
This is an omnivorous species that need to be fed predominantly meaty foods like krill, cockle, prawns and squid, which should also be supplemented with additional plant based foods like nori or spirulina. Offering a balanced diet is very important to the long term health of triggers,
