Live Morioworms Reptile Food

Live Morioworms are large, active feeder insects suitable for bigger insect-eating reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Their substantial size makes them particularly useful for animals that require a larger livefood than standard mealworms.

Also known as superworms, morioworms are the larvae of the darkling beetle Zophobas morio. Their movement can encourage natural hunting behaviour, making them an appealing livefood for many predatory species.

Which Animals Can Eat Morioworms?

Their larger size makes morioworms suitable for a range of appropriately sized insectivorous and omnivorous animals, including bearded dragons, water dragons, larger geckos, chameleons, some turtles, frogs and large invertebrates.

Dusting & Gut Loading

Morioworms can be gut loaded before feeding by providing them with a suitable nutritious diet.

They can also be lightly dusted with an appropriate calcium or vitamin/mineral supplement immediately before being offered. The supplementation required will depend upon the species, age and overall diet of the animal being fed.

Calcium supplementation is particularly important for reptiles with dietary requirements that make them vulnerable to calcium deficiency and metabolic bone disease.

Keeping Live Morioworms

Morioworms are relatively straightforward to keep at home. Store them in a well-ventilated container at a suitable room temperature, with an appropriate dry food or bedding such as bran or oats.

Small pieces of suitable fresh vegetable can be used to provide moisture, removing uneaten pieces before they spoil.

Unlike standard mealworms, morioworms shouldn’t normally be refrigerated. Keeping them too cold can harm them rather than simply slowing their development.
