The Hoplo Catfish is a large, sociable catfish that's ideal for large community tanks with no small fish. They are best maintained in groups of 5 or more specimens. The aquarium should have soft sand substrate to protect the Hoplo's delicate sensory barbels and lots of rocks, wood and plants for the fish to explore and use as cover. They prefer dim lighting. They are fond of digging, so it's a good idea to ensure that all decor is fixed down and secure and rocks are placed around plants to prevent them from being uprooted. They enjoy a fairly strong current with plenty of oxygen in the water.
Ideal tank mates will include some of the larger tetras, barbs, some of the more peaceful cichlids, rainbowfish and larger rasboras.
Food can be offered in the form of catfish pellets and sinking wafers, as well as fresh or frozen fish foods.
