Gold Common Plecos are one of the most commonly purchased algae eating fish in the hobby. Many people think that these fish are "coldwater" algae eaters when they start off with the hobby. This is actually not true and they aren't for everyone.
The gold common pleco is a very large armoured catfish that can reach up to 50cm in length. They require a very large aquarium of at least 5ft in length. The substrate should be soft sand to protect the pleco's delicate underside and additional decor of bog wood and smooth rocks offers the fish a shady spot for resting and places to hide. Plants are recommended, but be aware that a large pleco is more than capable of dislodging all of your decor and plants.
Tank mates can be anything as these fish are not terribly interested in their tank mates and generally too large and armour plated to fall victim to predation. This makes them a great choice for cichlid tanks because very few fish will try to target a pleco. It is however worth noting that they don't appreciate the company of their own kind. We don't recommend housing more than one in a tank.
Whilst they famously like to keep their home algae free, they are also omnivores and as the fish grows, it's important to accept that algae alone will not sustain it. Feed pleco wafers and catfish wafers as well as small amounts of meaty foods such as mysis, brine shrimp, bloodworm and others.
Please note that the image is for illustration purposes and the fish you will receive may not be identical. These fish are still juveniles and have yet to colour up. A healthy environment and good quality food will help bring them into full colour. If you have any questions about keeping these fish, please don't hesitate to ask a member of staff.
