Overview
The Gold Barb is a large and peaceful species that prefers cooler waters. It is an ideal candidate for temperate aquariums and will cohabit well with most other species of fish. They should be maintained in a shoal of at least 6 specimens to allow them to exhibit their natural behaviours and exercise their social structure. They are able to adapt to most conditions as long as they're not in the extremes. These fish will make an excellent substitute for Goldfish, which are not really considered appropriate for most home aquariums.
Aquarium
A planted aquarium would be ideal, but plants with soft and delicate foliage should be avoided as these barbs do enjoy nibbling at them. Give them plenty of swimming space! Robust plants like Java Fern and Anubias tend to be left alone. Temperatures should be at the lower end of the tropical scale and current should be medium for this species. These fish will spawn amongst plants, but will likely eat their own eggs shortly after.
Tank Mates
Most species will make good tank mates as long as they like to be cooler and aren't small enough to be eaten. Ideal tank mates include Weather Loaches, other similar barbs, Variatus Platies and White Cloud Mountain Minnows.
Feeding
Food can be offered in the form of pellets, flakes and fresh or frozen fish foods such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp.
