The Flame Tetra is a very pretty species from Brazil. They are one of the smaller sized tetras and tend to be very peaceful. As a shoaling species, they should be kept in a group of 6 or more specimens, but 10 or more will make this shy species feel more at ease. These fish are able to adapt to an enormously wide range of conditions and be kept with most other species of community fish, making them an ideal addition to a beginner community tank.
As these fish are happy at almost every level of the tropical temperature range, they can be kept as temperate fish as long as a heater is installed during the winter to ensure that temperatures don't drop too far below 20°C. Flames kept at a higher temperature tend to be more colourful.
The aquarium should be spacious with plenty of plants, tangles of drift wood and rocks for these fish to utilise and use for cover. The aquarium must be mature and should ideally be soft and acidic. These tetras will make an excellent addition to a peaceful South American community with cories, Whiptail Catfish, other Tetras, dwarf Cichlids and many other species. They should not be housed with boisterous species as they are easily spooked and quite a nervous fish.
Food can be offered in the form of pellets, flakes and fresh or frozen fish foods such as mosquito larvae and brine shrimp
