The Clown Loach is a large scale-less species from South East Asia. They are a fun addition to any aquarium as they are quite an active and aesthetically pleasing fish. They are widely available in the hobby, but most people are unaware of the sheer size they will grow to. Putting them in an ordinary sized tank will cause stunting and health issues in the long term. If cared for properly, these fish can live for decades.

The aquarium should be very large and at least 6 feet long. with powerful filtration to match. Substrate should be fine sand to protect the loaches' delicate barbels. The addition of bog wood, caves, plants and shady spots will help the loaches feel  secure and comfortable. They are very sensitive to nitrates and so partial water changes are recommended to be performed at least twice a week. It is also worth noting that like all loaches, they are sensitive to formaldehyde treatments (widely used for white spot) and should either be removed from the aquarium when treatment occurs or have dosage adjusted.

Like most loaches, they are social and should be kept in a group of 4 or more individuals, but larger numbers are preferable. Without contact with their own kind, clown loaches become quite depressed and stressed out. Tank mates can include Angelfish, Tetras, Barbs, Rasboras and Rainbowfish among others as these loaches aren't particularly willing to kill other fish. Shrimps and snails (Especially snails) however will be eaten as they form part of the natural diet of clown loaches.

Food can be offered in the form of sinking wafers and tropical pellets or granules as well as fresh or frozen fish foods such as mysis, brine shrimp, bloodworm and daphnia
