Blue throat triggers are a distinctive fish that can be somewhat challenging to keep due to their very specific needs and habits. The aquarium needs to be large (minimum 350L) with no other blue throats or similar shaped fish. They are not suitable for reefs as they may nip at corals and invertebrates.

The blue throat can be somewhat territorial towards conspecific and will not tolerate their own kind unless they’re a bonded pair. They can be kept with larger robust fish such as tangs and certain wrasses, but smaller timid fish should be avoided. They require plenty of hiding spots and space in and around the rockwork in the aquarium.

They are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet of meaty foods, pellets and seaweed. Offering different foods several times a day ensures that their dietary needs are met.
