Description

Live Brineshrimp 100ml Fish Food

Live Brineshrimp is a popular choice of fish food for many freshwater and marine keepers alike. Brineshrimp (Artemia) are naturally rich in protein and are readily accepted by a wide range of aquarium species, making them an excellent addition to a varied feeding programme.

Many aquarists use live brineshrimp to encourage feeding in newly acquired fish, support conditioning prior to breeding and provide a more natural feeding experience than dry foods alone. The small size of brineshrimp makes them suitable for community fish, tetras, rasboras, livebearers, dwarf cichlids and many marine species.

As part of a balanced diet, live brineshrimp can help add variety while encouraging natural hunting and feeding behaviours.

Why We Recommend live brineshrimp

Live Brineshrimp is one of the most versatile live foods available in the aquarium hobby. The small size makes it suitable for a wide range of tropical fish, while the constant movement triggers a strong natural feeding response.

We often recommend live brineshrimp for newly acquired fish, shy feeders and species that can be reluctant to accept dried foods. It is also a popular choice when conditioning fish for breeding, as the high nutritional value can help improve condition and encourage spawning behaviour.

Because brineshrimp are smaller than bloodworm, they are particularly useful for smaller community fish such as tetras, rasboras, gouramis and dwarf cichlids that may struggle with larger live foods.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fish can eat live Brineshrimp?

Brineshrimp (Artemia) are suitable for most species of marine and freshwater fish. We highly recommend them for fish that are anywhere between 3cm and 15cm in length as they will most likely have mouths large enough to take this frozen food, but won’t be so large in body size that they would find the food to be insubstantial. Equally, largely herbivorous species will enjoy the odd treat of brineshrimp, but won’t necessarily get much nutritional value out of it as their digestive systems are not designed for such high protein content.

Is Brineshrimp a complete food for fish?

Brineshrimp are great, but fish require a more varied diet. Nearly all fish are omnivorous to some extent, so they need fibre and other key nutrients to remain healthy. In nature, many carnivorous species would receive these nutrients via their prey and what the prey had eaten. This is something that reptile keepers in particular try to achieve through “gut loading”, which is the practice of feeding quality food to insects that are intended to be offered as food. For fish, it’s a lot more simple. Use brineshrimp and other live or frozen food as part of a varied diet with flakes, pellets and other nutrient rich fish foods that are fortified with the vitamins and nutrients normal fish require.

How often should I feed live brineshrimp?

Most aquarists feed brineshrimp and other live or frozen foods 2-3 times per week. as a treat or to supplement the diet of their fish. The natural diet of your fish should be taken into account and frequency reduced for fish that don’t necessarily eat a lot of meat in the wild.

Is frozen food better than live?

Both have their advantages. Live food triggers a stronger feeding response due to the movement of the shrimp, whilst frozen food can be stored for longer and tends to be more hygienic. Some species will completely ignore frozen foods, but will readily accept live. Live foods can continue to live in the aquarium for a considerable length of time, allowing your fish to continue to hunt naturally without worrying about spoiling the water quality.

Are Brineshrimp good for breeding fish?

Absolutely. One of the simplest things fishkeepers can do to encourage breeding is to increase the amount of high protein live or frozen foods they offer. This boost of protein and fats will bring most fish into breeding condition and even encourage better colouration as a result.
