Blue Apple Snail – Pomacea sp.

Apple snails are one of the largest species of snails in the aquarium hobby. The come in a range of colours and can be a very charming addition to the aquarium that will also help with algae control and food. They do have big appetites and many aquarists find themselves offering algae wafers to supplement the snail’s diet as they deplete the algae supply in their habitat. Due to their healthy appetite for greenery, these snails will munch on certain plants, but they are also great scavengers, hoovering up any uneaten food they find around the aquarium and this is actually their primary source of food.

They will occasionally leave the water and can climb out of tanks, so it is imperative that the aquarium has a lid to prevent your snail from going on big adventures. This is usually to lay eggs as the snail will always lay them out of the water, making it actually quite easy to collect the eggs and dispose of them.

As these are snails and require a certain amount of calcium to continue to grow a healthy shell so it is recommended that they are kept in alkaline conditions of pH 7 or higher.
