Description

Aquarium Filter Media Bag

A simple but incredibly useful addition to almost any aquarium filtration system, our Aquarium Filter Media Bags allow loose filter media to be contained securely while still allowing water to flow freely through the material.

Simply fill the bag with your chosen filter media and secure it with a suitable cable tie. The media can then be positioned inside a filter, sump or other suitable high-flow area where water can pass through it effectively.

Available in coarse or fine mesh and two different sizes, making it easy to choose the right bag for both the filtration media and the space available.

Suitable for a Wide Range of Filter Media

Aquarium Filter Media Bags can be used with many loose filtration products, including:

  • Activated carbon
  • Phosphate-removing media such as RowaPhos
  • Zeolite
  • Biological filter media
  • Other loose chemical and specialist filtration media

Choosing between coarse and fine mesh will depend on the size of the media being contained. Fine mesh is particularly useful for smaller-grained products that could escape through a coarser bag.

More Than Just a Media Bag

These bags can also provide a useful protective barrier around aquarium equipment.

They can be positioned around suitable filter inlets to help prevent very small fish, shrimp and other livestock from being drawn into the filtration system.

They may also be used as a temporary protective barrier around suitable wavemakers and circulation pumps where there is a risk of livestock coming into contact with the intake. This can be particularly useful in aquariums containing anemones, which can move unexpectedly around the aquarium.

Care should always be taken to ensure that adding a protective mesh does not excessively restrict water flow through the equipment.

Aquarium Filter Media Bag Frequently Asked Questions

What can I put in an aquarium filter media bag?
They can be used with many loose filtration products, including activated carbon, phosphate remover, zeolite and suitable biological media.

Should I choose coarse or fine mesh?
This depends on the filter media you intend to use. Fine mesh is better for small-grained media, while coarse mesh provides excellent water flow and is suitable for larger media that cannot escape through the openings.

Where should I put a filter media bag?
For filtration purposes, position the bag somewhere that aquarium water is actively being drawn or pumped through it. Simply leaving a bag in an area with very little water movement will reduce its effectiveness.

Can I reuse the bag?
Generally, yes. The bag itself can be rinsed and reused if it remains in good condition. Whether the filter media inside can be reused or regenerated depends on the particular product.

Can I use one to protect shrimp or small fish from a filter intake?
Yes. A suitable mesh bag can provide an additional barrier around some filter inlets. Check it regularly to ensure debris isn’t accumulating and restricting water flow.

Can it be used around a wavemaker?
It can provide a protective barrier around suitable equipment, particularly where wandering anemones or small livestock are a concern. However, the mesh must not significantly obstruct the pump or restrict its intended water flow.
