The Albino Senegal Bichir is a large predatory fish that's widespread in Africa. This species is largely nocturnal, hunting at night. The aquarium should be 6ft long to house one of these as they are a very long fish. Substrate should be soft sand and the lighting dimmed or diffused with floating plants. The addition of rockwork and bog wood will offer this fish places to hide and explore. A tight fitting lid with any gaps plugged is essential as Bichirs are accomplished escape artists and are able to breathe atmospheric air through their modified swim bladder. They are obligate air breathers, so it is imperative that they are able to access the water's surface or they will actually drown. Filtration needs to be able to handle the meaty diet of this fish, but flow should be fairly gentle. Bichirs have very poor eyesight, but an excellent sense of smell. Many have been observed lifting their heads when food has been added to aquarium and sniffing out its location.
Despite being predatory, they are a relatively peaceful species and tank mates should be chosen carefully. Avoid anything small enough to fit into its mouth, but very large and boisterous species may outcompete the Senegal Bichir for food. Some ideal tank mates could be Angelfish, knifefish, African Butterflies, Arowanas and other types of Polypterus.
