Description
Chilli Oscar – Astronotus ocellatus
The Chilli Oscar is a colour variation of Oscar Cichlid – Astronotus ocellatus, which is one of the most recognisable and interactive large freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby. Known for its intelligence, bold personality and strong owner recognition, Oscars quickly become the centrepiece of large aquarium setups. Native to slow-moving rivers and floodplain habitats in South America, Oscars are highly active cichlids that develop distinct individual personalities and often interact directly with their owners during feeding and maintenance.
Chilli Oscar Aquarium
A Chilli Oscar requires a very large aquarium with strong filtration and stable water parameters. There should be plenty of wood, rocks and other décor for enrichment and to break the line of sight. Plants are not recommended for this species as they have a tendency to shred them. The substrate should ideally be sand or smooth gravel as Oscars are avid diggers and sharp gravels may cause damage to their mouths. Any decorations in the aquarium should be glued into position or too heavy to move as Oscars do enjoy fixing the feng shui in their own tank by moving things around according to their own tastes. The water should be soft and acidic to neutral. Strong filtration is necessary as these fish produce an astonishing amount of waste, whilst regular partial water changes are also essential to control nitrate and phosphate levels. This is especially important as Oscars are prone to Hole in the Head disease, which is primarily caused by poor water management and poor diet.
Oscar Cichlid Behaviour
Chilli Oscars, like all others of their kind are incredibly intelligent and full of personality. Whilst they’re small, they can seem quite peaceful, but these fish will grow at an alarming speed and can throw their weight around quite a bit when they’re adults. They aren’t quite as aggressive as many other South and Central American Cichlids, but they are still somewhat territorial and opportunistic predators. They do require at least one of their own kind for company. Oscars tend to get quite lonely when kept as a single specimen and it’s best to have two if the aquarium can accommodate. They are also famous for the dramatic and emotional displays when something isn’t to their liking. It’s not uncommon for an Oscar to get stroppy if you’re trying to clean their tank and they certainly don’t approve of you rearranging their stuff. Sometimes Oscars can be so dramatic that they will turn grey and pretend to be dying just because you changed their water! A few hours later, they’ll act like it never happened.
Ideal Tank Mates
Tank mates for this species are other South American species of similar size and temperament. We recommend Severums, Geophagus, Silver Dollars, Uaru and larger Catfish like Raphaels and Gibbiceps. Avoid excessively aggressive fish like Midas Cichlids, Flowerhorns and Terrors, as well as any fish that could become a snack.
Feeding your Chilli Oscar
This is a largely carnivorous species that will benefit from sinking pellets, occasional veggie flakes and a variety of fresh and frozen fish foods such as brine shrimp with spirulina, mysis shrimp, krill and some spinach. It is important to give them some variety in their diet, rather than feeding them exclusively meaty foods as it keeps them healthy. Oscars enjoy a surprisingly wide range of greens and fruits!
FAQ
Can Chilli Oscars – go in my community tank?
Unfortunately, Oscars are not suitable for general community. They can be quite territorial, but also predatory. They can grow to a substantial size, which means most community fish will be viewed as potential food.
Can I get a male and female pair of this fish?
Unfortunately we only keep a small number of chilli oscars, so a male and female pair may not be available. We will however do our best to try and send what is asked for whenever possible
Can Oscar Cichlids be kept with Malawi?
No. This would be an inappropriate mix of fish as they have completely different requirements and temperaments.
Is a Chilli Oscar Suitable for Beginners?
Oscars can make great pet fish. We would recommend that a lot of research is done before keeping these fish, purely because of the challenging water management routine required by these large and very messy fish. It is also worth bearing in mind that an oscar can live well over 10 years if cared for properly.
Is it OK to give Oscars feeder fish?
This is a practice that hasn’t been approved in the UK for a considerable number of years. It is unnecessary suffering for a feeder fish and also poor nutrition for your Oscar. Astronotus ocellatus are not piscivores and require a range of nutrients in their diet that feeder fish are often entirely devoid of. There is also the added risk of cross contamination of diseases and parasites to your Oscar. There are much better live and frozen foods available that are far more hygienic and morally sound.
