Overview
Silver sharks are a very large species that requires an equally large aquarium of at least 6'. They are a surprisingly shy species and can be quite prone to darting around the tank if something spooks them. Decor should be chosen accordingly. avoiding any shark rocks or pointy pieces of wood to ensure that the sharks don't injure themselves when diving for cover. Plenty of shady spots should be provided for the fish to utilise as cover. Ideally these fish should be maintained in a shoal of 6 or more specimens, which is why aquarium size is important. The water should be well filtered and well aerated with a reasonably fast flow.
Temperament
Though they are referred to as Sharks, this is largely due to their loose resemblance to sharks. They are in fact a type of barb and have the temperament that comes with it, which is why it's important to have several specimens in the aquarium to facilitate their social needs. They are also not related to Red Tail Black Sharks and other similar species.
A Silver Shark should not be housed with particularly aggressive species, but makes a great companion for some of the more peaceful large cichlids and catfish. Small species should be avoided as they're likely to be eaten. In the wild, they are an endangered species, but all specimens sold in the aquarium trade are tank bred.
Food can be offered in the form of large pellets and flakes, as well as fresh or frozen fish foods such as brine shrimp, mysis, krill and chopped mussels.
