The Rocket Gar is a piscivorous species from South America. It is a fairly shy species that spends much of its time in thick vegetation, at the upper levels of the water, searching for prey. This fish should only be housed in a large, mature aquarium with excellent filtration. The aquarium should be furnished with a lot of bog wood and tall plants. Floating plants will also offer additional cover for these surface dwellers. Whilst filtration should be efficient, water movement should be gentle as these fish don't appreciate a strong current. Light should be diffused.
Despite being predators, Rocket Gars are surprisingly peaceful and don't generally cause trouble in the tank. Tank mates should be chosen with care, avoiding small fish altogether, but also avoiding any particularly aggressive species. Some suitable tank mates could be Geophagus, Silver Dollars and various larger peaceful catfish species such as Raphaels, Plecos, Snakeheads and larger whiptails.
Food should be offered in the form of fresh or frozen fish foods such as mysis, brine shrimp and bloodworm for juvenile specimens and more meaty foods like krill, mussel and lancefish when they're more mature.
