The Red Flagtail is a large characin from South America. It has been favoured by large fish enthusiasts for some years now as it is a fairly peaceful fish that mixes well with medium to large peaceful cichlids, as well as other tank busters that can't be kept with ordinary community fish.

The tank must be large from the outset as this fish grows to 35cm in length and does so fairly rapidly. The addition of wood, rocks and soft sand would be ideal, but live plants are best avoided as these fish will almost certainly see them as food. Plastic or silk plants will make a great substitute as they will still provide the stimulation for the fish. The aquarium must have a lid as these fish are expert jumpers!

Ideal tank mates for flag tails would be Tinfoil Barbs, Silver Sharks, Severums, Uaru and many more.

Food can be offered in the form of cichlid pellets, as well as fresh or frozen fish foods such as mysis.
