Red Beckford's Pencilfish are a peaceful shoaling species that should be maintained in a group of 6 or more individuals. In terms of needs and behaviour, this fish is no different from the standard Beckford's Pencil.
The aquarium should be spacious and heavily planted with both floating and submerged plants. Dark substrate and background are preferred for this fish and it will really make their colours stand out. Colour can vary in this red form of the classic Beckford, but a good diet and ideal conditions should bring out the red colouration. Though it is a peaceful species, the males can bicker from time to time, but this rarely leads to injuries and the losing fish generally retreats into the plants. Beckfords will occupy mainly the middle and top parts of the aquarium, but don't tend to be territorial.
Tank mates can be chosen freely as the Beckford will get along with most fish and grows to a size that makes it far less likely to be eaten by anything. Ideal tank mates can be rasboras, peaceful cichlids, angel fish and various catfish.
Food should be offered in the form of micro pellets, flakes and fresh or frozen fish foods such as mosquito larvae, daphnia, bloodworms and brine shrimp.
