The Rainbow Shiner is one of the most exciting fish in the hobby. This species, which is happiest at lower temperatures may look a little drab at first glance in the shops, but once it has settled into a home aquarium, the males will start to come into breeding condition and change colour dramatically. Colours of bright pink, purple and iridescent blue appear on the fish, transforming them into the full technicolour form.
This is a largely peaceful shoaling species that should be kept in a group of 6 or more individuals. The aquarium needs to be spacious as this is a very active species. Oxygen levels should be high and there should be a decent current
Food can be offered in the form of pellets and fresh or frozen fish foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp.
