The porcupine Pufferfish is a popular choice for fish only marine aquariums, owing partly to the undeniably cute appearance and friendly personalities. They are one of the few fish that are particularly responsive to visual stimuli and many keepers have likened them to pet dogs because of their willingness to interact.
This is one of the more peaceful puffers and can be kept in most fish only aquariums. They are even happy living with their own kind as long as the aquarium can accommodate their size and the specimens are all about the same size and added at the same time. They are not reef safe and should not be kept with small, delicate or submissive species.
The aquarium needs to be spacious with plenty of rock work. The filtration must be powerful as these fish are voracious eaters and produce an unholy amount of waste. The flow, however needs to be gentle as pufferfish are fairly poor swimmers and can't tolerate a strong current.
These puffers are well known for chewing on cables and tubing inside the aquarium, so please make sure that these are protected. Additionally, if maintenance is being carried out inside the tank, be aware of where the pufferfish is as it can give a pretty unpleasant bite or spike you if it's puffed up. Pufferfish should never be actively encouraged to or made to puff up. It is unsettling for the animal.
This is a carnivorous species that need to be fed predominantly meaty foods like krill, cockle, prawns and squid, among other things. Offering a balanced diet is very important to the long term health of puffers. We recommend using tongs to feed your puffers as they may accidentally bite you instead of the food, which can be very painful.
If you have any questions about keeping these fish, please don't hesitate to ask a member of staff.
