The Pentazona Barb or Five Banded Barb is a species native to South East Asia, where it is found predominantly in calmer waters of ponds, ditches and streams. They are a peaceful shoaling species that should be kept in groups of 6 or more specimens in a medium to large sized aquarium. The aquarium should be well planted with gentler flow and plenty of hiding places. If this species is kept with particularly boisterous and large fish, it is likely to be very timid. Nearly all specimens available in the hobby are tank bred, which tend to be more colourful than the wild form.
Ideal tank mates can include Pearl Gourami, Harlequin Rasbora, Kuhli Loaches and other similarly peaceful barbs.
Food can be offered in the form of flakes, pellets and fresh or frozen fish foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworm.
