Panther Crabs are a striking species and one of the few fully aquatic crabs available in the hobby. In the wild, they are active predominantly at night.

The Aquarium

The Aquarium should be reasonably large with very alkaline conditions. Substrate should be fine sand or small grained gravel, with plenty of smooth rocks, driftwood and caves available for the crab to utilise as hiding spaces. A tight fitting lid is essential as this species is an expert escape artist and a skilled climber. Though they are fully aquatic, there should be some opportunities for the crabs to leave the water if they so choose. Lighting should be subdued to encourage this nocturnal species to be more active during the day. Plants can be added to the aquarium, but will most likely be damaged or eaten.

Behaviour

Panther Crabs are quite shy by nature, but very territorial. If several specimens are to be kept together, there should be plenty of rockwork and caves to accommodate them all. It is not recommended that they are kept with fish as they are likely to eat them. Though they're unlikely to catch a healthy fish during the day, they can be quite prolific at night when the fish stay in one place to sleep.

Feeding

Food should be varied as Parathelphusa pantherina is an omivorous species. They will eat just about anything from courgettes to krill and even dry fish food. Both meaty and veggie foods should be provided regularly to keep your crab in good condition. Specific crab foods are also available and highly recommended to keep the crab in good condition.
