The Pacific Lipstick Tang is a very large active fish ideally suited to larger aquariums. They are not an overly aggressive species, but will not tolerate sharing their space with their own kind, so only one should be kept in the aquarium. The aquarium must be large due to the fish reaching almost half metre in length, which does not include the long tail filaments of the males. There should be plenty of rocks for the tang to browse for algae and additional caves and other hiding places for it to retreat to if it feels threatened. Open swimming space should also be available. They are voracious eaters and should be fed several times a day, so powerful filtration is an absolute must.

This tang is more likely to tolerate other tangs of a different genera than most do, but it is still recommended that it is the last fish to enter the aquarium as it may decide to become territorial towards newcomers.
