Orontium aquaticum – Golden club

Orontium aquaticum, commonly known as golden club, is a distinctive marginal aquatic perennial valued for its sleek blue-green leaves and unusual golden-yellow flower spikes that rise above the water in spring. It thrives in pond margins, bog gardens, slow-moving water, and other consistently wet settings, where its architectural form adds bold seasonal interest. Its water-repellent foliage and tidy clumping habit make it an elegant choice for naturalistic planting, wildlife-friendly gardens, and ornamental water features.

  • Attractive blue-green, water-repellent foliage for long-lasting visual interest
  • Ideal for pond edges, bog gardens, rain gardens, and shallow water planting
  • Typically reaches around 30–60 cm tall with a spread of approximately 30–75 cm
  • Slowly spreading rhizomatous habit, suitable for naturalistic and wildlife-friendly planting
  • Low maintenance and well suited to containers or baskets in water gardens

Care Instructions

Grow Orontium aquaticum in full sun or light partial shade in rich, moisture-retentive soil, deep mud, or shallow water. It performs best at pond margins or in containers submerged in approximately 15–45 cm of water, with shallower conditions encouraging more upright growth. Remove spent flower spikes and yellowing leaves to keep the plant tidy, and divide rhizomes in spring if needed. Keep the planting area consistently wet and avoid allowing the roots or crown to dry out during the growing season.
