The Lionhead or Blockhead Cichlid is a moderately sized African Cichlid from the Congo River. This species prefers fast flowing waters with high oxygen levels. To achieve this, additional powerheads should be installed in the aquarium to provide the necessary flow that carries the oxygen needed by this fish. In calmer aquariums, they don't tend to do well. The aquarium should be furnished with smooth rocks and soft substrate to mimic their natural environment and to provide calmer spots for resting away from the strong current. The addition of plants is not necessary, but can be beneficial, as well as aesthetically pleasing. Robust species like Anubias and Java Fern are recommended as some plants don't tolerate the fast current. Unlike the majority of African Cichlids, they prefer their pH quite neutral.
These fish should be kept in pairs and other cichlids should be avoided as they can be somewhat territorial. Additional species should be chosen according to the level of flow as many fish won't be able to cope with such a strong current. Congo Tetra, Synodontis Catfish, Rainbow Shiners, Pencilfish and Siamese Algae Eaters are just some of the options.
Food can be offered in the form of sinking pellets, as well as fresh or frozen fish foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworm and mysis. Spirulina enriched foods are highly recommended as this cichlid likes to have a fair amount of ruffage in its diet.
