Description
L106 Spotted Orange Seam Pleco – Hemiancistrus guahiborum
L106 Spotted Orange Seam Pleco – Hemiancistrus guahiborum is a striking South American pleco prized for its bold patterning and peaceful temperament. Native to the fast-flowing rivers of the Orinoco basin, this attractive species is best suited to mature aquariums with excellent water quality and plenty of water movement.
Although less commonly encountered than many popular plecos, Hemiancistrus guahiborum is a rewarding species for aquarists looking for something a little different. Given the right conditions, these fascinating catfish become confident, active fish that spend much of their time grazing over wood, rocks and other hard surfaces.
L106 Spotted Orange Seam Pleco Aquarium Setup
Orange Spotted Pleco thrives in mature aquariums with clean, highly oxygenated water and good water circulation. A river-style aquarium with smooth rocks, bogwood and plenty of shaded retreats closely mimics their natural habitat and encourages natural behaviour.
Multiple caves and hiding places should be provided, particularly if keeping more than one pleco. Strong filtration and regular maintenance are essential, as these fish are sensitive to deteriorating water quality.
Unlike some common plecos, this species is best introduced to established aquariums where stable conditions have already been achieved.
Behaviour
This is a peaceful species that spends much of the day resting beneath wood or inside caves before becoming more active during the evening.
While generally tolerant of other fish, adult males may become territorial towards similarly shaped bottom-dwelling species if space is limited. Providing several hiding places usually helps minimise disputes.
They are best kept singly or in spacious aquariums with plenty of territory if housing multiple plecos.
L106 Spotted Orange Seam Pleco Tank Mates
Tank mates should be other peaceful species that can appreciate the conditions that this fish thrives in. It may however have territorial disputes with others of its own kind or similarly shaped fish. Ideal tank mates include Loaches, Larger Tetras, Pencil Fish, Rainbowfish, Geophagus, Severums and Silver Dollars.
Feeding
Although L106 Spotted Orange Seam Pleco will feed on algae and biofilm, they will need to also be fed to maintain their health. As they are omnivores, we recommend algae wafers, as well as catfish wafers alongside treats of frozen fish foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and mysis. Additional supplements of cucumber or courgette is also recommended. Keep in mind that this fish has a higher than usual protein requirement.
