Description

Jumbo Sponge Filter XY380

Jumbo Sponge Filter XY380 is an ideal filter when keeping Shrimp or raising young. A quick and effective filter that is easy to clean and modular so that you can extend. Requires an air pump (not included).

Sponge filters offer mechanical and biological filtration whilst also providing the aquarium with aeration. The fine, dense sponge protects small fish and shrimp from being sucked into the filtration unit whilst also trapping waste and debris suspended in the water column. The ribbing in the sponges increases surface area for bacteria to colonise as well as trapping debris suspended in the water column, making this a very efficient system to run.

It does require an air pump, but not an air stone. Simply connect the sponge filter to the air pump with an  air line and provide your aquarium with filtration and air at the same time for great water quality and healthy fish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Do Breeders Use Sponge Filters?

Sponge filters are one of the most commonly used filtration methods in breeding aquariums. Because they have no exposed intake, eggs, fry and shrimp cannot be sucked into the filter. The gentle water movement also helps prevent stress in young fish while still providing excellent biological filtration.

Are these good for Betta?

Yes. Betta prefer to live in smaller aquariums and many of them can be prone to having filters that blow the water a little too hard. Bettas don’t like this. Their excessive fins and tails often makes it harder for these fish to swim against the current. Sponge filters on the other hand are a lot less turbulent and better suited to a Betta’s specific needs.

Why is my sponge filter not producing enough bubbles?

Air flow can be compromised by a number of factors, such as a clogged sponge, kinked airline or failing air pump. Regular maintenance will ensure that things keep going as they should.

Can this be the only filter in an aquarium?

For lightly stocked aquariums, shrimp tanks, nano tanks, breeding setups and Betta aquariums, a sponge filter is often more than adequate. Larger or heavily stocked aquariums may benefit from additional filtration.

Did you know? At Shirley Aquatics we use sponge filters in nearly all of our tropical display tanks. This means we can have them closed from the rest of the system for really sensitive species and to prevent any issues.
