The Green Terror, otherwise known as Gold Saum is a large Cichlid from Central America. Like most Central Americans it is an aggressive species that needs to be kept with fish of a similar temperament.
The aquarium should be aspacious with a soft sand substrate as this fish enjoys landscaping activities. The addition of rocks, wood, caves and other visual obstacles will provide stimulation and hiding places, as well as visual barriers that can help with controlling aggression. Plants may be added, but it's best to choose robust species like anubias and java ferns as these fish may shred anything that's soft enough. Floating plants are also welcome and will provide additional shady spots. As with all cichlids, this is a messy fish with a high protein diet and will need filtration that can handle it. The flow should be relatively gentle.
This species is notoriously aggressive and territorial and that should be taken into account when choosing how many to keep and what to house them with. You should not keep more than two in a single aquarium and they should be a male and female pair. Alternatively, this fish will be quite happy on its own. If a pair are to be kept, they should be the only cichlids in the aquarium to avoid serious conflict. A single specimen can be housed with other large cichlids of a similar temperament such as Oscars, Red Terrors, Jack Dempseys etc. Some less aggressive species like tinfoil barbs, silver sharks, silver dollars and large plecos may be suitable also.
Food should be varied. They will eat cichlid pellets, herbivore flakes, fresh vegetable matter and fresh or frozen fish foods such as mysis and krill.
